Whether you're delivering a segment for a current affairs programs like CBC's 'the fifth estate' or CTV's 'W5', getting the story and delivering it on budget and on time were supreme. Learning to produce within containers, within limits whether that's a budget, location, time or weather - or something else, required adapting and making decisions on the spot. The push is a rush and the joy comes from the ride to get it right. Together with a team. Putting out stories that you believe can be part of a change for the better is fuel enough.

A production always originates in passion for a story about a person, event or idea that stirs you for some reason. There's no explaining that; it just does and you have to tell it. A good story won't leave you alone. It pulls you, agitates you, keeps you up at night and meets you first thing in the morning. It won't let you think about anything else. It actually becomes your blood.

Lang tells stories to change something in the world - a perspective, an understanding, a view. Stories from natural history summoned awe, joy and respect for all life around us. Current affairs stories can expose vulnerabilities and stimulate greater personal power or more acute political literacy. Most recently, filming in the slums of Nairobi brought life-changing lessons in dignity, spirit and determination. What's common? The desire to connect a story about a person to an audience: create a path from one to another. Tell a story about someone who's amazing, who's living a good life, or expose someone who's a con or liar, or celebrate someone who's found a way to live a life of integrity or be happy against great odds, or relay an idea that opens our minds to new and amazing ways to live with more joy and grace. There's no recovery from some good ideas that are well-presented; you'll be changed for life. That's the idea.
